Leadership in Northern Education Award Presented to Innovation Hub

The Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre, based in Greater Sudbury and led by faculty from Huntington University, is proud to announce this year’s recipient of the Leadership in Northern Education Award. In recognition of their leadership in faculty support and mentorship, innovation and application of technology for education-at-a-distance, and ongoing evaluation, the 2018 Leadership in Northern Education Award is being presented to the Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub at Cambrian College.

“This award recognizes leadership in education in Northeastern Ontario,” said Dr. Lorraine Mercer, Director, Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre. “This is the first year a team has been selected, and the staff at the Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub at Cambrian College have demonstrated themselves as leaders in their approach to supporting and mentoring faculty. Using innovative strategies they are enhancing teaching and learning experiences for faculty, who in turn are implementing innovative approaches in their own classrooms.”

“The mandate of the Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre at Huntington University has always been the promotion of excellence and innovation in higher learning and professional development throughout the north,” said Dr. Kevin McCormick, President and Vice-Chancellor of Huntington University. “I commend Dr. Mercer and the faculty team on our end, who lead this awards program in recognition of those who work every day to enhance teaching and learning experiences within schools and/or the community. Congratulations to the entire staff team in the Innovation Hub at Cambrian College.”

“We’re honoured to receive this award. It demonstrates that the work we’re doing in the Hub is having a positive impact on the education our students receive,” says Dr. Jenni Hayman, Chair, Teaching and Learning, Cambrian College. “It takes great teachers who embrace new ways of thinking and doing things to produce the great students who have the technical, communication, and problem-solving skills that the modern workforce needs.

As a recipient of the 2018 Leadership in Northern Education Award, the Teaching & Learning Innovation Hub at Cambrian College has also been invited to select a deserving student to be the recipient of a $250 award from the Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre. Alison Frauts, a third-year public relations student at Cambrian College, has been selected as the recipient of this award. In May 2018, Frauts was granted a student position as graphics and web designer for the Cambrian Hub, a role she will resume for the summer. She is currently completing a placement with Hard-Line, a leading heavy equipment remote control supplier based in Dowling, Ontario.

Call for Nominations

The Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre is currently seeking nominations of northern leaders from the primary, secondary and post-secondary educational sectors, and/or public or private sector community education services. We welcome nominations by colleagues, community members, or self-nominations.

Nomination letters matched in detail to the criteria of the award, with full contact information of the nominator and nominee(s) can be submitted directly to Dr. Lorraine Mercer, Director of the Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre of Excellence, via email: teachingandlearning@huntingtonu.ca.

The deadline for nominations is August 15, 2019.
