HUNTINGTON UNIVERSITY HONOURS LOCAL HUMANITARIAN GEOFFREY LOUGHEED AT SPECIAL CEREMONY

SUDBURY – Last night, Huntington University held their annual Convocation ceremony at the VALE Cavern at Science North, presenting Geoffrey Lougheed with an Honourary Doctorate of Sacred Letters. Family, friends and community members joined in this celebration of personal success and life achievement.

“Tonight is a very special night, but I honestly and earnestly believe that this type of award is a reflection of the caring community of which I am a part. I am very blessed to have had strong and supportive parents, a dedicated brother and a wonderful wife, who provide a foundation for my life every day,” said Dr. Geoffrey Lougheed, during the reception that followed the event. He continued, “Huntington University has a long and respected tradition within Greater Sudbury and I am proud to be part of their family.”

Every year since its inception and as far back as the archives confirm, Huntington University has maintained a long-standing tradition of presenting deserving and distinguished guests with honourary degrees. This year’s Convocation ceremony not only paid homage to Huntington`s legacy, it also served to honour a respected community leader, long-time partner of education and a dear friend.

Huntington University’s President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kevin McCormick commends Dr. Lougheed for serving as a great champion of our community. He adds: “Huntington University is pleased to award the Geoffrey Lougheed with the university’s highest honour and is proud to welcome him into the Huntington University community of distinguished leaders.

The honourary doctorate degree uniquely recognizes and celebrates an outstanding individual who continually demonstrates exemplary contributions toward the betterment of the community – whether in higher education, at the community level and more.

More About the Honourary Recipient, Dr. Geoffrey Lougheed

Born and raised in Greater Sudbury, Geoffrey Lougheed has profoundly marked this community as Vice President of Operations at the family firm of Lougheed’s Limited for over three decades. His compassion and sympathy continues to make a valuable impact on our community.

As well, Geoffrey Lougheed is also the driving force behind many local initiatives and institutions. In 1982, he was a Founding Member of the Sudbury United Way; he is a Past President of the Rotary Club of Sudbury, served as District Governor’s Representative in Northeastern Ontario and in 1994 was named Rotarian of the year; in 1986, he and the late Rev. Fr. B.J Mckee, founded the Sudbury Food Bank, which represents over 46 Sudbury and area Food Banks and recently underwent a capital campaign, led by Geoffrey.

Geoffrey is well-known in he community for his guidance in the not-for profit sector, serving on a variety of boards and committees, like the local Sudbury Branch of the Red Cross, where he is a Past President of the Board of Directors, the Salvation Army Advisory Board of Sudbury, the Sudbury and District Alzheimer Society; he sat on the Heart and Soul Steering Committee and he has chaired the Sudbury St. John Ambulance Board of Directors for 10 years, and is currently serving as Vice Chancellor for the Order of St. John Priory of Canada.

Among these accomplishments, Geoffrey has been recognized for his contributions and generosity on a local, provincial and national level. He is the proud recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, a Legion Friendship Medal, the Inaugural Salvation Army National Volunteer of the Year Award and under the authority of Queen Elizabeth II, he was invested by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson as a Knight of Justice in the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem.

MARCH 23, 2012

For immediate release

LEADERSHIP IN NORTHERN EDUCATION AWARD

SUDBURY –The Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre of Excellence at Huntington University established the Leadership in Northern Education Award to acknowledge an individual who has succeeded in providing leadership to teaching and learning throughout northeastern Ontario, contributed to the scholarship of education, enhanced educational programs and the quality of teaching and learning, and created strategies to enhance teaching and learning experiences with the community.

We are pleased to announce this year’s award recipient is Lynne Wallace. Wallace received the award at Huntington University’s convocation ceremony, held last night at Science North. She has been passionately engaged in adult education for 35 years and is currently serving as the Executive Director for the College Sector Committee for Adult Upgrading.

Lorraine Mercer, Director of the Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre of Excellence, says “the Centre is honoured to recognize Lynne Wallace’s leadership in adult education and literacy for College and University preparation in Northern Ontario and across the province. Her steadfast dedication to adult learners is an inspiration to us all.”

Perhaps most important to students in rural and remote communities in the North, Wallace, in cooperation with many partners, has managed the development of a bilingual academic and career entrance on-line program that can result in a certificate equivalent to a secondary school diploma for the purposes of college postsecondary entry and apprenticeship registration.

“Huntington University is proud to present this award to deserving recipient, Lynne Wallace,” adds President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kevin McCormick. “With more than 20 years experience, her personal and professional commitment to adult learners has been unwavering. We commend her for her efforts and are proud to recognize her deserving accomplishments.”

Her accomplishments are many and extend well beyond the North’s borders and into the provincial policies, guidelines and curriculum for adult education. Students, colleagues, and public officials alike offer praise for Lynn’s leadership in “education that works”. Lynne’s efforts have helped adult learners and have helped raise the profile of foundational adult education as it takes its place in the continuum of educational services in Ontario. Huntington University offers its sincere congratulations to Lynn Wallace.

Huntington University is proud to announce that Professor Kristeen McKee, a faculty member in the Communication Studies program at Huntington, has been selected as one of Sudbury’s 40 Under Forty. The award recognizes the achievements of Sudbury’s brightest and most inspiring young leaders.

“Professor Kristeen McKee exemplifies Huntington’s legacy with her tireless dedication to community service and higher education” says Dr. Edward Conroy, Chancellor of Huntington University. He adds, “Her passion for teaching, combined with her enthusiasm for volunteerism makes her a true leader rooted in the north. We are very proud of her many achievements and thrilled to see her being recognized within the community.”

Established in 2006, Sudbury’s 40 Under Forty is a prestigious award program that honours the achievements of young leaders in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors in the Sudbury and Manitoulin area. Professor McKee joins a stellar group of award recipients that will be honoured at the 40 Under Forty Awards Gala at the Caruso Club on November 17, 2011.

“This is a humbling experience, one that would not have been made possible without the unswerving support of the Huntington University community”, said Professor McKee. She adds, “This prestigious award reflects the appreciation of an entire community for the outstanding contributions made by many dedicated community members. This is an honour I am certainly proud of.”

In addition to teaching in the Communication Studies program at Huntington University, Professor McKee is the Chair of St. John Ambulance for Northeastern Ontario where she works with community based programs offering First Aid and training as well as other outreach programs for service to the community. Her volunteerism spreads to other agencies, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sudbury where she has been involved in their mentorship program for over five years now and also serves on the Board.

Sudbury’s 40 Under Forty is “an amazing program that recognizes a diverse group of individuals who are not only accomplishing great things in their field but also in their community”, says Dr. Kevin McCormick, President and Vice-Chancellor of Huntington University. “We are extremely proud and privileged to have Professor McKee as an integral part of the Huntington University family.”

A native of northern Ontario, Frank Mahovlich’s hockey skills were honed at an early age. In 1958 he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning the Calder Trophy as rookie-of-the-year. Over the course of an illustrious career that spanned 22 years, he scored 626 goals, was selected to nine all-star teams and was a member of six Stanley Cup winning teams with Toronto and Montreal. In 1971 he tied the record for most playoff points and he was a key member of Team Canada during the memorable Canada-Soviet hockey series of 1972. Frank Mahovlich is a member of Ontario’s Hockey Hall of Fame, Canada’s Hockey Hall of Fame and the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

Since retiring from the game in 1978, he has devoted himself to community and charitable organizations and, as a result, has received considerable public recognition for his contributions to Canadian society. In 1994 he was awarded the Order of Canada and in 1998, Prime Minister Jean Chretien appointed him to the Canadian Senate where he currently sits on Senate committees for Agriculture and Forestry and Foreign Affairs and International Trade. As a distinguished alumnus, Senator Mahovlich was awarded the Order of St. Michael in 1996. In 2002, he received a Honourary Doctorate from St. Francis Xavier University.

Huntington University’s President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Kevin McCormick commends Senator Mahovlich for serving as a great champion of the north and an outstanding role model for Canadians at-large. He adds: “Huntington University is pleased to award the Honourable Francis W. Mahovlich, C.M. with the university’s highest honour and is proud to welcome him into the Huntington University community of distinguished leaders.”
