Contemporary Milestones
Huntington University’s reputation as a dynamic, multidisciplinary university focused on teaching and scholarship has its roots in 50 years of pursuing academic excellence, student success and community service. This tradition of individual empowerment and leadership building was developed by Huntington University; an institution with a proud history as one of the founding and federating partners of Laurentian University.
The university originated in 1960 and was proudly founded with the goal of providing higher education opportunities to teachers and learners in the northern backdrop of Sudbury, Ontario. In less than five years after its inception, Huntington University saw growth in both its student population and community profile, leading to the construction of its current campus, located minutes away from its federated partners and nestled between pristine wilderness and the urban offerings of the City of Greater Sudbury.
In its 50 year history, Huntington University has evolved into a comprehensive campus community, offering undergraduate programs in the humanities and social sciences, specifically in the area of Communication Studies, Ethics, Gerontology, Religious Studies, Philosophy and Theology. It is specifically under the guidance and leadership of Huntington University’s administration as well as all staff and faculty that Huntington proudly maintains long-standing traditions of diversity and interdisciplinarity approaches to learning, creativity and community service.
Today, Huntington University services 2,300 students by providing them with rooms in residence and a number of teaching and classroom studios to accommodate increasing enrolment. Huntington University continues to be responsive to the needs of a diverse student population as well as to the inter-faith and multicultural environment in which it resides. Furthermore, Huntington is committed to innovative leadership and scholarship as well as creating and fostering dynamic partnerships. Notably, the contributions of Huntington continue to evolve with the opening of the newly established The Lougheed Teaching and Learning Centre of Excellence, a research community founded by Huntington University President Dr. Kevin McCormick and a number of Huntington faculty members. Through this centre, Huntington seeks to build a community of collaboration by hosting its first annual academic conference titled Lectures and Landscapes: Diversity in Northern Higher Education planned for May 2010.
A growing university, Huntington currently has a number of partnership agreements with colleges and universities in Canada and overseas, benefiting both teachers and learners locally, provincially, nationally and beyond. As well, renovations of existing facilities, the launch of our new website and the upcoming celebration of our 50th anniversary are but some of the many exciting events occurring at Huntington University.
It is with pride and pleasure that Huntington looks forward to another successful 50 years of providing the north with inclusive and accessible higher with dedication to superior teaching supported by scholarship and service to the community.
